On March 16th, GDUCI held its first community meeting for the Gem City Market (a worker & community owned grocery store). Over 150 neighbors attended the meeting, and over 100 people signed pre-order forms to buy shares of the cooperative. Many also joined volunteer committees to help make the store a reality. Community members gave voice to the deep need for access to fresh and healthy food, as well as their support for community ownership of a vital neighborhood asset. The next day, the GDUCI Steering Committee officially voted to incorporate the Gem City Market Cooperative and elected its interim Board, which will helm the effort to develop the cooperative until community and worker owners are elected.
